Sod and plants can't fix a yard that drains the wrong way, because the ground has to be shaped first.
When the yard is flat in the wrong places or slopes toward the house, water sits, washes out beds and finds the foundation. Grading the ground first, so water runs where you want it, is what lets the sod, the beds and the patio hold up.

Grading questions
Every question here is one somebody actually asked on a forum or an inspection site, and each answer links to where it was asked.
Can you grade a new house lot for sod?
Yes. Lot grading is one of Jake's services, and it's usually the step right before sod and planting, so the lawn goes down on ground that's shaped to drain.
Source: facebook.comDo you fix yards that hold water?
Yes. Drainage and grading are part of what Gorilla Outdoor Design does. Jake looks at where the water sits and runs first, then plans the fix.
Source: facebook.comWhat comes after grading?
Usually sod, beds or gravel, so the ground stays where it was shaped. Jake does sod, planting and gravel too, so the yard gets finished by the same person who graded it.
